Research Activities

  • Co-Founder, Past-President and current Principal Investigator, Missouri Valley Cancer Consortium CCOP, which was funded by the NCI
  • Board of Directors, NCI-funded national cooperative group, ALLIANCE. Also served on the committees on audit, comparative effectiveness research, health disparities, cancer of the elderly and neuro-oncology
  • Executive Committee, Mayo Clinic-based North Central Cancer Treatment Group. Also served on bylaws, novel therapeutics and audit committees and co-chair of the health disparities committee
  • National Cancer Institute: Member, Head & Neck Cancer Steering Committee; Alternate Member, Breast Cancer Steering Committee and Member, Strategic Planning Core Group of the NCI CCOP program
  • Chairman of the Research Oversight Committee, Alegent Creighton Health System
  • Principal Investigator, Cancer Alliance of Nebraska:  Spearheaded and created a Pan-Nebraska research network of oncologists to improve clinical trial access to non-metropolitan communities in Nebraska
  • Published over one hundred articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals and has written book chapters in Oncology

Healthcare Reform Leadership

  • Founding President and CEO of MIPPA which currently has over one thousand physicians and other providers. Chairman, Accountable Care Organization (ACO) and Healthcare Reform Committee
  • Member, ACO steering committee, UniNet PHO of Nebraska, 2011
  • Member, Brookings-Dartmouth ACO Learning Network, 2011
  • CEO, MIP LLC: launched in 2012, now grown to over 175 physician partners
  • CEO, MIPPA-Aetna Health Plan on Nebraska Health Insurance Exchange: successfully engineered in 2013, with Aetna and Methodist Health System, one of the nations first physician-led Health Plans on Health Insurance Exchanges under Affordable Care Act. Delivered a gain-share for physicians annually.
  • Medical Director, Midwest Health Coalition (MHC) Pan-Nebraska Medicare ACO: spearheaded the formation and approved by the CMS in 2013. Successfully doubled the size of the ACO in the second year and more than tripled in the third year.
  • MIPPA-AET TeleHealth Project: initiated through MIPPA, in order to address disparities in access to healthcare in rural communities of Nebraska and Western Iowa
  • Employer Direct Contracting & Bundled Payments: spearheaded through MIPPA, direct contracting and bundled payments for MIPPA physicans
  • Speaker and author on Accountable Care Organizations, Value-based healthcare and new healthcare delivery and payment reform
  • Spearheaded two commercial ACOs with Blue Cross and Cigna, with provision for gain-share for physicians.
